Bad News: If You Aren’t Using An Organic Moisturizer, Your Skin Could Probably Be A Lot Healthier

Dr. Claude Burton, a professor of dermatology at Duke University School of Medicine and one of the foremost experts in the world on skin health is often quoted for his finding that “healthy skin is your body’s primary defense against infection, [and] if you let your skin get dried out and cracked, you could be giving all sorts of nasty bacteria a way in.” Clearly, it’s important to keep your skin moisturized. This helps prevent your skin from being affected from the harsh weather, bacteria, and any other elements that can harm your skin and your body.

The most healthy organic moisturizers are ones that are manufactured from natural products only and are entirely free of synthetic chemicals, including preservatives. These products are your best choice as they will not contain any parabens, mineral oil, or chemical preservatives that harm your body with repeated use over time.

A moisturizing loaded with chemicals is almost certain to contain mineral oil, something that simply sits on top of the skin’s surface, contributing to clogged pores and the development of pimples.

Most people believe that moisturizer gets absorbed into your skin and provides your skin with moisture it lacks, when in reality the skin actually doesn’t absorb most of the ingredients in a moisturizer: the main function of moisturizer is to prevent moisture loss through the skin’s surface, of the water and natural oils that already exist in your skin.

If you choose to make your own, olive oil can be very effectively used as an organic moisturizer. You can even just rub a little extra virgin olive oil into your skin and let it hydrate your face. Many do this and attest to how well it works.

A few other practices, besides using a quality natural moisturizer, for keeping your skin in excellent shape include drinking lots of water and not using soap on your face. Drinking plenty of water helps your body feed your skin with the moisture it needs and keeps it from drying out as easily, and helps reduce the appearance of aging over time. And as mentioned, it’s best to not use regular hand soap on your face. Many don’t realize that one of the most common causes of dry skin is using regular soap on your face. Many soap products are not pH balanced at a pH of “7” and will contribute to dried up, cracked skin. So avoid using soaps to clean your face and stick to a glycolic cleanser or some other quality face cleanser with natural ingredients, for the better looking, healthier skin.
