Faster Hair Growth – Can Vitamins And Shampoos Really Make Hair Grow Faster?

Hair grows at an average rate of about 1/2 inch per month. Still there are vitamins, shampoos, leave-in conditioners, etc that promise longer hair. You may be wondering if these products really work.

To explain how these products work. You first need to understand that hair grows in three phases: anagen (growing), catagen (resting), and telogen (shedding). Each individual hair goes through these three phases. However, the growth phase is the longest. It can range from two to six years (and maybe more). The resting and shedding phases are relatively short. If your hair grows normally, you will never know that you hair is in the resting or shedding phases.

Some people have naturally long growth phases, and therefore naturally long hair. A person with a 6 year anagen will grow hair about 3 times the length of a person with a two year anagen. This is genetically determined and is usually only changed by pregnancy. When a woman is pregnant, the estrogen rich environment locks her hair into the growth phase. Then shortly after giving birth, many of the hairs immediately go into the resting and shedding phases. This has lead many women to believe that prenatal vitamins caused their hair to grow. However, it is their hormones.

Hair vitamins with MSM can be used to naturally lengthen your hair growth phase. Methylsolfonylmethane, or MSM, is a natural form of organic sulfonyl sulfur. This compound is present in many foods, especially most raw fruits and green vegetables. MSM provides sulfur that is required for healthy collagen and keratin.

So what about hair growth shampoos? A healthy scalp free of fungus and bacteria is the ideal environment for hair to grow. However, it cannot do much in the way of promoting hair growth. Hair is already dead, otherwise it would hurt when you cut it. Shampoos can cause damage, however, leading to breakage. If your breakage equals your growth, your hair may seem to not grow at all. For this reason it is important to choose shampoos that are not damaging to your hair. Many common shampoos contain harsh sulfates that can strip your hair. Take a look at the ingredients in your current shampoo. If it contains any of the following, it could be damaging your hair:

  • Ammonium Laureth Sulfate
  • Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate
  • TEA Laureth Sulfate
  • TEA Lauryl Sulfate
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

These types of shampoos should be used for clarifying only. A clarifying shampoo should be used only once a month. Using a clarifying shampoo will allow more effective penetration of your protein and moisturizing treatments.

The following sulfates are gentle and will not damage your hair:

  • Sorbitan Laurate
  • Decyl Polyglucose
  • Cocamidoprpyl Betaine
  • Sodium Myreth Sulfate
  • Sodium Laureth Sulfate
